Chemical accidents
Accidents of various scales occur while processing, delivering, storing, and using toxic chemicals. Such accidents can usually occur in the chemical, petrochemical, oil refining, meat and dairy industries, refrigeration plants, water reservoirs, warehouses storing chemicals, military ammunition storage areas, vehicles carrying chemicals, etc. To avoid chemical poisoning, it is important to know the following safety rules.
What to do in case of a chemical accident:
- immediately after the warning signal, turn on the radio or TV, and follow the instructions of the official authorities;
- protect the respiratory tract with a gas mask or multi-layer gauze soaked in liquid that neutralizes the toxic substance, or a medical mask to prevent poisoning;
- do not take off personal protective equipment until leaving the dangerous area;
- disconnect gas and electrical appliances;
- take the emergency pack with you;
- if possible, wear rubber boots and a cloak and leave the area in the opposite direction of the wind;
- help those who need help;
- when leaving the poisoned area, undergo sanitary cleaning organized by the relevant agencies.
What to do after a chemical accident:
If you are able to leave the dangerous area:
- drink a lot of liquid (milk, water, tea, etc.);
- clean the mucous membrane of the eyes with eye drops;
- take a shower as soon as possible;
- do not use your clothes without washing them;
- save your energy;
- consult a doctor for a preventive examination;
- do not use food products or water in the accident area without the permission of the relevant authorities.
If you are unable to leave the dangerous area:
- turn off the air conditioner and ventilation system, close the doors and windows;
- close the pores where air enters the apartment with "sticky tape";
- do not use the basement for protection;
- regularly sprinkle water in the air;
- do not leave the house, wait for the rescuers.
