Rules of behavior in case of emergency situations
Storm, hurricane, tornado
Wind is the horizontal movement of air volume from a high pressure area to a low pressure area over the Earth's surface.
Storm is a strong wind with a speed of 75-117 kilometers per hour, which causes large waves in the sea and destruction on land.
Hurricane is a strong (destructive) wind with a speed of 118 kilometers per hour or more.
Tornado is a swirling movement of air in the form of a column or funnel. During the tornado, the air moves at an average speed of 300 kilometers per hour at an altitude of 1000-1500 meters.
As strong winds can cause destruction and casualties, the following guidelines must be followed:
-fasten doors and windows, increase the resistance of the window to wind pressure by gluing paper strips;
-keep a 2-3-day supply of food, water, medical supplies, and an independent source of light (a lantern, candle, or oil lamp);
-prepare one of the inner rooms for staying and collect all necessary items there.
In case of a hurricane:
- if you are at home during a hurricane, turn off gas and electricity and disconnect appliances;
- go to a pre-prepared inner room or a place in the corridor without a window;
- follow the latest information from official authorities about the disaster and follow the recommendations;
- if you are on the street, stay away from light and temporary constructions and buildings; do not stand under electric poles, wires, or tall trees;
immediately try to hide in the basements of nearby buildings or in strong buildings;
- protect your face from pieces of stone and glass thrown around by the wind with cardboard or other solid items; also protect your mouth and nose from dust with a scarf;
- if you are at home during the tornado, go to the basement immediately. If you're out in the open air, lie down in a nearby ditch;
- if you're in a car, stop it, get out of the cabin, and hide in a nearby ditch.
