Rules of behavior in case of emergency situations
Tsunami
Tsunami is a series of waves in a water body, usually caused by a submarine earthquake, an underwater or coastal landslide, or a volcanic eruption. Since a tsunami is a dangerous natural phenomenon, it is important to know the safety rules related to it.
Signs of a tsunami:
An earthquake is a natural warning signal about the danger of a tsunami. Before a tsunami, as a rule, water retreats hundreds of meters, sometimes kilometers, from the coast. This retreat can last from a few minutes to half an hour. The unusual behavior of animals and their movement towards high places are also signs of a tsunami.
Rules of behavior in case of a tsunami:
- explain the tsunami warning signal to your family members;
- learn in advance the location of the nearby non-flooding heights and the shortest routes to them (at least 2-3 km from the coast, 30-40 m above sea level);
- follow news on the tsunami forecast;
- keep in mind that you have a few minutes to half an hour for safety measures;
- if you are in a closed space, turn off gas and electricity, leave the place immediately, and go to the safe place you have determined;
- if you cannot reach a safe place, go to the upper floor of a tall building;
- if you have to stay indoors, go to the upper floor of the building;
- try to stay away from things that can fall on you;
- if you are in an open area and there is no tall building nearby, hide in an an impact-resistant place;
- if you are in the water, get rid of tight and heavy clothing, try to hold on to any item that does not sink in the water;
- protect yourself from dangerous items that the wave may bring;
- provide first aid to the injured if necessary.
What to do after a tsunami:
- wait for the alarm signal to end;
- you can return home only with the permission of the relevant institutions;
- when you return home, do not turn on gas and electricity supply systems without making sure that they are in order;
- to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, quickly collect the garbage brought by tsunami water and clean the yard and the house;
- use the source of drinking water after a proper sanitary inspection.
